Image Stack Graphics

My goal was to improve the image stack of this iPhone SE 3 phone case.

I specifically chose this one because I recently bought the phone case for myself so I felt like I could approach the design from a consumer’s perspective.

Research and reference

Something that immediately stood out to me was the word “Military Grade.”  It sounded tough and felt like a reliable tool to protect my phone from above-average impact.

I researched military grade equipment and found some items that looked tough and strong. The Speedbox — as well as the shape language of the phone case itself — were the inspiration for the shapes framing each image.

I also found an image from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) documenting military grade standards. I loved the aesthetic of the schematics and blueprint sketches and knew I wanted to incorporate that element in the graphics. This also inspired the blue background (which also complimented the branded orange from the original image stack).

I liked the font of the writing on the papers in the DLA image. It reminded me of old telegrams which felt like an easy association to the military.

Sketching and Concepts

Once I had an idea of the aesthetic I wanted I then needed to figure out how to layout each page and where I would present certain information.

I started by doing rough sketches of each page while incorporating images from the original image stack. I played around with different framing layouts as well as various levels of detail. I wanted to incorporate “blueprint” illustrations as much as possible so I also spent this time trying to figure out where those elements would fit best.

After some rough sketches, I made some rough concepts in Procreate.  My goal was to figure out a general color scheme and how the different elements would take up space.

Final Outcome

Once I was comfortable with the concepts, I cleaned the designs in Illustrator. I created simple building blocks to keeps graphics and angles consistent.

I wanted the blueprint sketches to have some texture, as if they were drawn with a pencil. Those were drawn with a textured brush in Procreate.
